How To Be Successful Working In A Call Center

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 562

Working in a call center can be a challenging job. You will have a lot of expectations put on you. You will be expected to take a large volume of calls while maintaining quality and meeting customer needs. You may have to deal with angry customers. There may be a pesky co-worker who annoys you all the time. You will probably have to sit at close quarters to your team. Your breaks will probably follow a strict schedule and your boss may monitor your idle time. If you are required to clock in, you may have to rush to beat the clock on some mornings. A call center job can be a great stepping stone to a better position in a big company. In order to get the best possible experience, it is important to follow a few simple rules. The first step to call center success is to always remain professional. Some of your co-workers may not exhibit the best behavior at all times. Try not to let their behavior influence yours. Do not curse, follow all the rules, and always be on time. You don't want the wrong person to get a bad impression of you. Even if you think its okay to let loose around someone you do not directly report to, its not. Corporate reorganizations are common these days and that person you didn't have any relationship with may someday become your boss. Keeping your cool is also important to call center success. Most people in a call center have to deal with an angry customer at some point. People may curse at you, call you names, and bring you to tears. It is important to remember that they are mad at the company, not you, and you are just doing your job. Sometimes the customer is wrong. Sometimes they are right. Either way, the best course of action is to follow the standard protocol and try to remain pleasant. You will be given training to help you deal with unpleasant customers. If necessary, take a deep breath and put the customer on hold if necessary. You don't want to be seen as a hothead who argues back with the customers. The last rule to help make you successful in your call center job is to dress professionally. This does not mean you have to wear a suit everyday to work. A good rule of thumb is to dress for the job you want, not the job you have. If your dress code is very casual, don't wear jeans everyday. Try to throw in a nice pair of slacks or a skirt once in a while. Appearance is very important to some people. You may catch the eye of someone important if you are dressed sharply. Even if you keep it casual, make sure you at least have a neat and well-groomed appearance. Anyone can be successful in a call center if they follow these rules. Many supervisors, managers, and other profile positions get their start in a call center setting. With the proper training and attitude, a call center job can be a stepping stone to a great career.
